SSC GD Constable FAQs

How much is deducted for a wrong answer?

0.25 marks. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Can I use a calculator?

No. Calculators and electronic gadgets are expressly prohibited.

Do NCC certificates carry bonus marks?

Yes, added to the normalised score and therefore affecting merit and cut-offs: 5 per cent of the maximum marks for an NCC C certificate, 3 per cent for B and 2 per cent for A. Bonus marks are not awarded to ex-servicemen.

Is there a single national cut-off?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about this exam. Cut-offs are published force-wise for the All-India Secretariat Security Force vacancies, and otherwise by state or union territory, by district category and separately by gender. There is no one figure to compare against.

Can I appeal a physical test result?

Height and chest measurements can be appealed on the same day. The efficiency test race carries no appeal.

Are ex-servicemen exempt from the physical test?

They are exempt from the efficiency test but must attend the standard test so measurements are recorded, and must clear the medical.

What is normalisation?

Where an examination runs across several shifts, raw marks are converted to a common scale so that sitting a harder shift is not a disadvantage. The normalised marks are what determine merit and cut-offs, which is why published cut-offs carry five decimal places. The governing methodology was superseded in June 2025 by a new one, so older material may cite the 2019 notice.

What is the answer-key challenge fee?

50 rupees per question, which is lower than the 100 rupees charged for CGL and MTS.

Is there an interview?

No.
